With its hilly terrain, the quaint hill-top villages, cypress tress, vineyards and orchards the area is often compared to Tuscany. As a lot of the hills here are very steep the vineyards are terraced and most work is performed manually.
The main grapes grown here are the native grape Rebula or Ribolla Gialla, which has been grown in the region for over 750 years and accounts of about 25% of total production. The region is known for its very good Rebula wines which are appreciated for their directness, simplicity, and purity. Other grape varietals in the region include Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignonasse or Sauvignon Vert, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
